The old coin of 1982 sold for $9,000!

The Professional Coin Grading Services (PCGS) has shown off the most expensive US coins ever made. In this case, the 1982 1C Bronze Small Date, RD (Regular Strike), which had a very low face value, sold for more than $9,000.

This coin from 1982 is part of the series Lincoln Cents 1959 to Date. It was made by Victor David Brenner and Frank Gasparro. PCGS says it only weighs 3.11 grams.

Does this one-cent coin have a large or small mintage?

PCGS says that 10,712,525,000 of them were made, and the Washington, D.C. mint is the one that made them. You may already know that these cents are 95% copper and 5% zinc.

Since a lot of these cents were made, why did this one go for the crazy high price of $9,988 when it was sold at Heritage Auctions? In fact, there were seven different kinds of cents in 1982.

Keep in mind that copper prices went up, so it wasn’t worth it to make them out of that. The U.S. Mint made them out of zinc instead. They had a D-mint mark on some of them because they were made in Denver. Philly, San Francisco, and West Point ones did not have any mint marks on them. That is, you can’t tell the difference.

The PCGS says that these Lincoln cents are the hardest to find in good shape. Since they are hard to find even when they are in bad shape, the most desirable one will cost a lot if it is ever found.

The RD (Regular Strike) 1982 1C Bronze Small Date coin sold for $9,988 because it was in MS67+ condition. Since it wasn’t just recently auctioned, the price may have gone up because of the higher cost of living and more people wanting to buy the rare coin.
